چکیده

Methods 30 patients with severe sepsis or septic shock were studied at ICU admission and after 24 and 48 hours. Immune cells were identified and isolated using an immunomagnetic positive cell isolation procedure (Dynabeads for Human Monocytes, Human B cells, Human CD4 cells, Invitrogen Dynal AS, Oslo, Norway). Enzymatic activity of mitochondrial complexes I, IV, and ATP synthase and ATP content were measured spectrophotometrically and expressed as ratio to citrate synthase for enzymatic activities to account for mitochondrial mass and as mass per μg of cellular protein for ATP content. Maximal mitochondrial enzymatic activities and ATP in the first 48h of sepsis were compared with samples from 20 healthy volunteers (Mann Whitney test).

Mitochondrial function of immune cells in septic shock: A prospective observational cohort study

BACKGROUND Reduced cellular ATP synthesis due to impaired mitochondrial function of immune cells may be a factor influencing the immune response in septic shock. We investigate changes in mitochondrial function and bioenergetics of human monocytes and lymphocyte subsets. METHODS Thirty patients with septic shock were studied at ICU admission, after 24 and 48 hours, and after resolution of sho...

Early decreased neutrophil responsiveness is related to late onset sepsis in multitrauma patients: An international cohort study

BACKGROUND Severe trauma can lead to the development of infectious complications after several days, such as sepsis. Early identification of patients at risk will aid anticipating these complications. The aim of this study was to test the relation between the acute (<24 hours) inflammatory response after injury measured by neutrophil responsiveness and the late (>5 days) development of septic c...

Plasma protein C levels in immunocompromised septic patients are significantly lower than immunocompetent septic patients: a prospective cohort study

INTRODUCTION Activated Protein C [APC] improves outcome in immunocompetent patients with severe sepsis particularly in those who are perceived to have high mortality risk. Before embarking on a trial of APC administration in immunocompromised septic patients, a preliminary study on plasma levels of protein C in this cohort is essential. OBJECTIVE To assess serum Protein C concentrations in im...

Early adaptive immune suppression in children with septic shock: a prospective observational study

INTRODUCTION Innate immune suppression occurs commonly in pediatric critical illness, in which it is associated with adverse outcomes. Less is known about the adaptive immune response in critically ill children with sepsis. We designed a single-center prospective, observational study to test the hypothesis that children with septic shock would have decreased adaptive immune function compared wi...

بررسی موارد سپسیس و شوک سپتیک در بخش مراقبت های ویژه بیمارستان مرکز طبی کودکان

Sepsis is the systemic response to severe infection in critically ill patients. Sepsis, septic syndrome & septic shock represent the increasingly severe stages of the same disease. Despite the remarkable improvements in outcome, sepsis & septic shock remain an important cause of morbidity & mortality in children. This is a retrospective study among the patients who were admitted in the pediatri...
